location: warden woods, Toronto, Ontario
The Gus Harris Trail is a 2km hike through Warden Woods Park, running from Pharmacy
Ave. just north of the Danforth up to the corner of St. Clair East and
Warden Ave., directly adjacent to Warden subway station. It is named after Gus Harris was the fifth mayor of the former City of Scarborough from 1979 to 1988.
Most of the trail runs along a nice little ravine that crosses through the woods. The water level is extremely low, with a rocky bed. the water is quite clear. The ravine is a continuation from the Don River. The trail starts from a car park on Pharmacy Avenue and on a warm day it may be difficult to find parking there. It is also easily accessible by TTC. You could get off at Warden station and walk back towards Pharmacy Avenue or vice-varsa.
A few minutes into the trail there is an aged wooden bridge that crosses the ravine. On the other side, a variety of tiny foot trails begin to weave their way through the forest on the western side of Taylor-Massey Creek.Warden woods is home to a great diversity of life. According to the City, roughly 300 unique plant species have been cataloged over the 35-hectares of Warden Woods. During my tour in early spring the trees were still quite bare. But soon it will be very much alive with life. I think the Warden Woods look best in autumn when the leaves are painted in beautiful shades.
Further north along the trail there is a 2nd, more picturesque bridge. Here, the ravine widens somewhat. This area is a lot more open and scarce of trees. Towards the end of the trail there is a little wooden fence that barricades the stream.
At the end of the trail it joins the intersection of St. Clair avenue east and warden avenue.
